Prerequisites for training

The competency-based SMI certificate course is open to those qualified in music therapy, art therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, psychology or similar, who have a minimum of 1 year's post-qualification clinical experience and are registered with a regulatory body. For those who are not music therapists, it is required to have a sufficiently well-developed relationship with music, though a formal music education is not required.

The course is also open to qualified GIM therapists wishing to train in SMI (and potentially RMI also) and integrate the method with their existing GIM practice.

Please note that it is not possible to practice the MI methods taught safely or effectively, nor train in them without having a prior therapeutic training. MI training represents specialist or advanced level training which develops and expands therapist's existing competencies (knowledge and skills).

Those who satisfactorily complete the course and its requirements will be awarded a Certificate in SMI and be entitled to practice the method independently (the training programme insured to award qualifications/certificates of competence). Subject to the Primary Trainer’s recommendation, they will also be eligible to undertake the similar length training in Re-educative Music and Imagery (RMI) offered by the Integrative GIM Training Programme.

Level 2 MI training: Diploma in Re-educative Music and Imagery (RMI), November 2025

This training is only open to those who have satisfactorily completed the Level 1 Certificate in SMI. Those who complete Level 2 training are eligible to be registered by Music Imagery Hub as MI therapists.

Certificate in GIM Adaptations for Health and Wellbeing:

Music Breathing, Progressive Body Relaxation, and Directed Music Imaging

Dates: 17 April (evening) 2026, 18-19 & 25 April (full days), 12 June (evening), 13-14 June (full days), 11-12 September (full days) & 9 January 2027 (full day). The course will be delivered ONLINE.

Training seminar fee

£890* (9-days training including group supervision taking place between April 2026 and January 2027 payable in 4 instalments). A few places at £712 are available for those permanently resident in countries with a GDP per capita of around €25,000 or less, e.g. Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Latvia.

* This training in GIM Adaptations complements the separate trainings offered by the Integrative GIM Training Programme in Supportive and in Re-educative Music and Imagery (SMI & RMI). There are, however, some overlaps in theory taught. Consequently, a corresponding small reduction in course fees is available for those who have completed SMI or RMI training with the Training Programme (dependent on the year of training). Those trained in MI who complete the GIM Foundations Certificate will potentially be able to integrate the techniques taught in their MI practice.

* A reduction in course fees is available for those who undertook one of the Music, Relaxation and Imagery (Receptive) Techniques for Music Therapists one-day workshops delivered by the training programme between 2015 and 2021. The Certificate in GIM Foundations includes but also very considerably expands on and develops what was taught in the workshops, with Music Breathing, Directed Music Imaging techniques and much else taught in addition, with supervision, extensive training manuals and other resources included, and a certificate of competence awarded upon successful completion of the course requirements. Anyone who attended a workshop previously is entitled to their full workshop fees being deducted from the GIM Adaptations course fees.

Bookings: Bookings will open in December 2025.

Prerequisites for training

The competency-based certificate course is intended for those qualified (or in the late stages of training*) in music therapy and registered with the HCPC. Those qualified in art therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, psychology or similar, who are registered with a regulatory body, may also potentially be considered, should they have a sufficiently well-developed relationship with music, though a formal music education is not required.

* Those in the late stages (e.g. final months) of training as music therapists are strongly advised to check with their course director before applying for the GIM Adaptations Certificate.

Please note that it is not possible to practice the techniques taught safely or effectively, nor train in them without having a prior therapeutic training. The course represents additional specialist training that can be undertaken by qualified therapists, and which assumes, develops and expands therapist's existing competencies/proficiencies (knowledge and skills).
